I had a boo-boo on my computer and I was unable to update the blog. Since we have been home (at Cassie's) she has been able to fix the problem with the blogspot. So after we return to Arizona, I will have time to get caught up again.

We had been so busy for the last six months. We have had a blast and there were lots of things to see and do.

Just would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. We have enjoyed our time with Cassie and her family for the holidays and also have enjoyed her beautiful new home. We won't be in the desert on New Years eve for the traditional campfire, but we hope to be there soon.

Hope you have a blessed holidays.

Safe travels,

From Ely we took Route 6 back across the state and ended up at the Saulsbury Wash Rest Area again. We stayed there for 3 nights. We took a trip over to Yosemite area to check out the camping available. We stopped in the Mammoth Lakes campground and was told they charge $48 to $52 a night and there was nothing available until late in August, soooo....we just drove around and went back to Saulsbury Wash RA. This is what we saw in our day trip to Yosemite (we did not go into Yosemite). Nice day trip though.

We spent a little bit of time in Eureka, mostly taking pictures and getting gas. Eureka is the home of the famous Eureka Opera House, had to get a picture of that. It was closed when we went though the first and second time (remember, we came thorough on Friday to get the mug for the community)
Now the reason for the great mug chase. June was the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln Highway (Hwy 50). They were giving away mugs to all travelers that came to each town along the route and visited all 7 communities. Jim and I did that!!! Also if you took a mug shot with your mugs and turned it into the Ely Chamber of Commerce they would give you an 8th mug to complete your set.

Here are the "MUG SHOT" of Jim and I with the mugs!!!!
NOW, I have full filled the quest for the Highway 50 Mugs!!!!

The really sad thing though, people have pryed the Lincoln medallion out of all of the Lincoln Highway markers along the route. You might be lucky to even find the Lincoln Highway marker in Ohio along Route 30.

More adventures to come....until later.

We stopped for only a short time in Austin. But what I do remember about the place is the road going out of town. The road was straight up and then just started winding in and out of the mountains. Why is it that the abrupt drop off has to be on my side of the vehicle!!!!

Even though we camped at the Hickison Petroglyph Area I just didn't see a reason to take pictures of more Indian writings. Sorry.

While I was in Austin, the lady in charge of stamping survival guides and handing out the mugs mentioned that they were running low in all of the communities. Oh no!!! That will never do. To come this far and not be able to get all of the mugs....well I had a plan for that. On Friday we took off and traveled the remaining 200 miles and get all of the mugs before they were gone. So we beat feet to Eureka, Ely and Great Basin in one day. So now I have all 7 mugs and all of the stamps in the survival guides. The reason that securing all 7 mugs were so important...........more about that when we get to Ely!!!

On to Eureka!!!!
Is this crazy or what!!

Well, here we are in Dayton, NV. Dayton is 11 miles east of Carson City and 36 miles Southeast of Reno, and 8 miles south from Virginia City (home of the Bonanza show). Now for the history lesson...Dayton was the site of the first gold strike in Nevada in 1849 by Abner Blackburn. Dayton was named after John Day the Surveyor General of the State of Nevada.

Dayton is the start of our journey across Highway 50. Hwy 50 is known as "The Loneliest Road in America". June happened to be the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln Highway and to celebrate, seven communities (Dayton, Fallon, Fernley, Austin, Eureka, Ely and the Great Basin National Park) rewarded travelers with a commemorative coffee mug. Each mug featured an iconic photo of the town specific to the Lincoln Highway. There was also "The Official Hwy 50 Survival Guide" book that could be "stamped" at each town. After securing all seven stamps the traveler would be awarded a Certificate for "I Survived Hwy 50". This certainly made the trip across Hwy 50 a little more fun!!!

Hawthorne, NV is a military base area. We camped at Walker Lake. Since it is a developed BLM property the camping fee was $3.00 per night. The lake was beautiful and the surrounding area was really neat. Again this area was recommended to us by our desert friend, Shelley. Shelley told us that the area was dirty and there were pack-rats every where. The campground didn't have rats and it was clean for the most part. What got to us was the insane number of large (quarter sized) spiders!!! They were everywhere. It took us a week and a half to finally get rid of them. Not one of the places we would recommend to go camping.

We had planned to stay three days. On the second day we were inundated with spiders. I don't like spiders at all.

Scenery was great though!!!

Onward and upward.....to the next place.

On up the road on Route 95 was Tonopah, NV. Which is about where we started to lose cell service and internet connection. We camped in the Saulsbury Wash Rest Area, 23 miles east of Tonopah on Route 6. Nice camp spot. By the way, the camp spot was free. We traveled to the Lunar Craters, the lava flow area and to Rachel, NV on the extraterrestrial highway.

Beatty, NV is the gate way to Death Valley. Since we were there we decided to see what we could see.

First stop in Death Valley was Scotty's Castle. A castle "built on Lies". The Castle was built in 1920 by Albert and Bessie Johnson, friends of Walter Scott-the infamous "Death Valley Scotty". The Johnsons were rich and they didn't want the public to know where they built their retreat so they told everyone that the castle belonged to Scotty.

We decided to travel up the West side of Nevada on Route 95, with a small exception of taking Route 160 up through Pahrump. Since we are Escapees members I wanted to visit the SKP Park. We stayed there 4 nights and it only cost us $15. More evidence of our cheapness.

From here we visited the Red Rock Canyon:
On Saturday, 5/25, we went on a train ride on the Boulder City Scenic Train. It was a three mile train ride to the Railroad Pass, which happened to be a Casino. There are casinos everywhere in Nevada.
Trains are a big deal in Nevada. The trains helped move all of the Gold, silver, and ore that were mined in the 1800's.

We finally left Arizonia (cousin Bob's), and headed out to discover Nevada!

So far so good....and there is more to discover.

Since it has taken me so long to get caught up on this blog (having fun or no internet access), we decided it would be best to consolidate the places we visited by the cities that we stayed near. We have visited quite a few attractions and have had several dune buggy adventures.

I hope you will bear with us and come back to see what we have been up to.

Having a great time......wish you were here!!!!

This was awesome!!!!!

In Peach Springs, AZ (along Route 66) there is access to the canyon floor. This was not a cheap trip though. Since the access and the river landing is on an Indian reservation a permit had to be purchased to go down to the Colorado river. The permit cost us $53.00 for us, the car and the dog to use their road. This was so worth it to me though.

Route 66 is known as the Mother Road!!! And there are still Burma Shave Signs along the road. We drove the stretch of 66 between Seligman, AZ east to Ash Fork, AZ for a walk down memory lane. I remember reading some of those sign on old Route 30 outside of East Canton when I was a kid. Do you remember them?

Time for another dune buggy ride....this time we headed out to Prescott National Forest. The scenery was great but the ride was a wee bit bumpy. By the time we finally got to the Forest we only drove 5 or 6 miles into it and turned around and headed back. We tried to take a short cut to the forest and ended up driving about 40 miles out of the way, then had to turn around and come back to the main road. Sometimes short-cuts aren't so short!!!!

The road going into the forest was as big as a four lane highway, just way to wash-board for any kind of comfort. Even Abby was ready for that ride to come to an end!

Not much of a forest where we were...but the scenery was great!!

We are really enjoying the versility of the dune buggy: on high way driving and off-road adventures.

Having a great time....wish you were here!!!

On April 16th we had to leave the BLM area south of Quartzsite...they closed the desert for the summer. We moved to the 14-day BLM area north of Quartzsite for a few days. The weather was just not to our liking to go further north yet.

We ventured north on the 18th. Because we had traveled Route 95 before we decided to explore a new way of getting to Cousin Bob's. We went up Route 93, and what a pleasant surprise. We traveled through the Joshua Tree Scenic Byway:
The rest of Rt 93 was pretty nondescript and the trip to Cousin Bob's were uneventful and made it there with no problems. It did, however, take us 34 minutes to drive from the freeway off ramp to bob's property; a total of 6 miles. Really lumpy road.
It is getting lonelier in the desert now. Most of the people that were here are already home by now. We are staying till they kick us out!!! April 15th is the last day and the desert closes then. The coyotes, snakes, scorpion and lizards get their desert back! It was a nice place to visit for the winter...I don't think I would want to live here...during the summer. It can get up to 120 degrees.
The Dune Buggy sure has been getting a workout since it has been rebuilt and the top has been added. Here are some of the sights of the desert, so far.....

Cant forget the flowers of the desert this year.....

And we can't forget you see the darnedest things in the desert.....

On one of our rides in the desert, Jim spied a Delorean sitting behind someones garage.

We saw the Clydesdale's horse at the gas station. They opened the doors to the stalls while the truck was being fueled. That trailer was immaculate!!!!

There is a "Airport" in Quartzsite. From the main road it looks like the airplanes were "real". We got up close to the aircraft. The one didn't have any wings and was sitting on three tractor tires, and the other one wasn't airworthy either. They were there just for show!!!

The pack of cigarettes was to mark where Jim saw a Scorpion. Look really hard and you will find the little bugger!!!! Weather is getting warmer (90's) so the snakes and scorpions are coming out now.

Hope the weather is getting better where you are!!!!

Time to move on soon.

Ok, on August 8, 2012 we got a cute little red dune buggy. We traded the golf cart in for the dune buggy so no money was exchanged at the time. If you have been following this blog at all you have been part of the repairs and upgrades done to the dune buggy. Our last addition to the dune buggy has been a top. The main reason for the top was to keep Abby out of the sun so she wouldn't bake in the hot desert sun.

That part was accomplished with the top:

You would think that being out here in the desert you wouldn't get a case of Cabin Fever, but allas that is what happened on Feb 28th.

Several of us from the desert neighborhood took off to explore a bit of Phoenix. We went to the Phoenix Zoo for the afternoon.

Sure enought there were animals at the Zoo. What a concept!!!!!

Amazing what a little rain can do. We had three days of rain in January, it really greened up the desert. I was impressed we had flowers blooming in January in the desert!!

Just a bit of January's happenings (no pictures of the event though). We took Abby to a veterinary clinic in Phoenix to have a 6 lb tumor removed from her right hind leg. She is doing much better now and is climbing steps and running with ease.

Since Feb 2nd was Groundhogs day we had to celebrate....with what else.....

December is a rather busy month for us. Jim's birthday was the 3rd.........so we had a campfire and invited all of the neighbors.

Dec 3rd campfire.

Then on the 13th was our wedding anniversary. No campfire that night, but we took a trip to Lake Havasu City. This is where they keep the London Bridge....
The reason for the trip was to get the dog her food. Lake Havasu was the closest PetSmart. What we do for our pets!!!
On the 20th we had the campfire for the End of the World Celebration......

On the 22nd was Cassie's (our daughter) birthday. Now get this, she is 36 for the year of 2013, I am 63. Get it 36 and 63. Pretty cool uh? This mathematical phenomena happened when she was 14 and I was 41 and will happen again when she is 58 and I will be 85 (if I live that long). This is a product of waking up in the middle of the night and couldn't go back to sleep!!

On the 23rd was my birthday, no campfire, but we did go out to dinner with a group of friends to the Quartzsite Yacht Club. Check out their web site at www.quartzsiteyachtclub.com. On their home page is a song about "Hi Jolly". It is such a hoot. You can also read the reason why the place is called the Quartzsite Yacht Club.

On the 27th we were invited to "Christmas Dinner" at Jan & Glen's campsite, and again a campfire....
As you can see there is a pattern to this desert lifestyle. It is just a great way to get the neighbors together and chat. Campfires usually start about 5:30 and go until 7:30, then everyone goes back into their campers and retires for the evening. Seriously, everyone is usually in bed by 9 PM, some even sooner than that.

We also did some of this....
